Savoring Summer, as I look out at the rain from my studio.

This is a painting based on a beautiful hike I took with my wife and daughter around Sauvie Island near my home in Oregon last summer. The sun was setting and hitting the tops of the trees across the lake, the wind had just died down allowing for colorful reflections.

my first painting class coming up in Newberg Oregon at the beautiful Chehalem Arts Center

New 2 day painting class coming up in Newberg Oregon at the beautiful Chehalem Arts Center
Painting Nature in Oils and Acrylics with Landscape Painter Michael Orwick, 4-7PM, March 18 & 19
Date: March 18, 2013

http://www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/learn/classes-workshops/painting/

Price: $40.00

What is it that draws us in and makes us want to explore a painting? learn the fundamentals that go into successful landscape paintings. We start with composition and how to establish large shapes first, abstract certain areas, develop a focal point, work from dark to light, and capture the illusion of reality through color. Michael is a very hands on painter who loves to share his knowledge and joy in painting. Learn from painting along with and from watching demos. Painting is hard, lets face it. But when broken down to simple subjects with achievable objectives we can make the process fun and rewarding! Amaze yourself and your friends with what you can learn to paint, you just need the courage to give it a shot.

Ages: Adults

This workshop includes two, three hour sessions, March 18 and 19 from 4-7 PM.

Classes will be held in the Strickland Visual Arts Studio at Chehalem Cultural Center.

No materials fee to instructor.

What if I sold my paintings for $50?

I sort of am.
New Auction, This original painting could be yours for just $50!
Brush Loaded with Light

http://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/michael-orwick/with-your-brushed-loaded-with-light/118862

This is an 11x14 painting in oils of one of my favorite creeks near my home. I love to explore and paint this wild area. The creek slowly turns through the forest tress and the light filters through the canopy of leaves. The water is so clear and cold you can see the small trout and water animals going about their watery business.

Many things could describe the "one thing": it could be a lone, gray, stark telephone pole amidst a lush stand of verdant trees; a bank of red, raw soil in the middle of a green landscape, an old, abandoned trestle, a country road, or the mist on the back water of a pond. It's the the "thing" that catches your eye, speaks to your soul and begs you to tell it's simple story. It's a heart-tug that can't be ignored, that longs to be heard, seen, experienced and expressed. You see it, recognize it and you set up your easel do your best to help to tell the story.

If you are an artist, you know what I'm talking about. If you're not but can identify, you also have a gift...the gift of seeing, feeling. I believe that the gifts we receive should also be dispersed to others in every way we can. That's how we can tell the story and honor the blessing of the "one thing".

I'll look for it again tomorrow and try again to tell the story.

The Most Important Question to Ask When You Buy Fine Art

This article is by Carolyn Henderson

There are a lot of questions to ask yourself before you purchase a piece of fine art -- whether it is an original or a limited edition print -- but the most important one is one that people frequently overlook:

"Do I like it?"

Ultimately, that is the question that carries the most weight, and it is the question that only you can answer.

Plein Air And More Cannon Beach

plein air

It’s hard to imagine a more picturesque setting than this small north Oregon Coast beach town. For years, the spectacular natural beauty of Cannon Beach has beckoned artists from around the world out of their studios to capture unique elements of this landscape “en plein air” or “in the open air”.  To celebrate this challenging artistic style and the work of the artists, the Cannon Beach Gallery Group is presenting the 4th Annual Plein Air & More festival. Scheduled for June 22-24, the event will include 28 artists represented by a dozen of Cannon Beach’s art galleries
The featured artists will create art on location throughout the town and on the beach on Friday and Saturday with their work showcased at gallery receptions on Saturday evening. They will also participate in a group show at the Cannon Beach Chamber Building Friday evening. The events are free and will take place rain or shine.
Maps detailing the location of each artist will be available at all Cannon Beach Gallery Group locations and the Chamber of Commerce. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions of the artists while they work, or simply observe.

DRAGONFIRE GALLERY
 Christopher Gerber
For Christopher, reality is not a static state but constantly occurring. His brushstrokes are inspired by the ink paintings of Zen and Taoist masters, evoking focus and intent. By using multiple layers of mica pigments, he generates a holographic effect in an ancient medium as he fuses the layers with torch fire, integrating contrasting textures and simultaneously revealing intriguing nuances. Dripping wax, he plays. He says, “It takes millions of bees pollinating millions of flowers to produce the couple of pounds of wax used in these paintings. That in itself is sacred to me, painting with life itself.”
 JoAnn Chartier
An award winning painter, sculptor, printmaker and published writer, JoAnn has been making art since the age of 12, when she learned the joys and frustrations of painting on location. Though most of her work is now done in acrylics in the studio, she returns to her roots to paint local landscapes and seascapes. She says the challenge of capturing the essence of a place in juicy oils using a knife or brush is, for her, like windsurfing or snowboarding to an adrenaline junky: Irresistible.
 Michael Orwick
Michael’s skill as a landscape artist creates compelling views of our world that move beyond time and place—places as mysterious as Oregon’s craggy coast, as unpredictable as a glacial view of Mount Hood, or as serene as an Oregon waterfall. His work can conjure up thoughts of Remington in his most enamored moments with the majestic west, or the dance of an impressionist on a pond or the snow.
